7 Museums in Goa you must visit
Goa is a heady combination of history, culture and tradition. If you are planning to visit our lovely
state, then why don't you plan your itinerary around one of the some of the world's oldest, most
famous and most prestigious museums — and seven of them at that! Allow me to show you eight
museums in Goa that are nothing short of spectacular!
One of the biggest draws for tourists visiting Goa are the well-maintained museums. Some of these
museums present the most impressive statistics pertaining to Goa's history and way of life. These
museums can also help us grasp Goa's pre-Portuguese mindset and post-British adaptations.
This list will be useful for you no matter who you are, where you come from and what your interests
are. You can make your holiday more educational or spend your days off at places close to home.
1) Museum Of Goa
You must journey deep inside Pilerne's industrial area to discover the first hidden window into Goa's
past. There is a lovely oasis of artistic innovation, a realm unlike any other, hidden within the
enormous steely greyness of Pilerne. Wonders that appear to have travelled from a place outside
the bounds of our straightforward, one-color reality can be found here. You are greeted by blue
sculptures that resemble mermaids as you approach the museum.
Only two years had passed since Subodh Kerkar's birth when Goa was freed from Portuguese
dominion. He established the Museum of Goa (MOG) and has had numerous exhibitions in India and
overseas, both in galleries and museums.
Three floors of contemporary art installations, studio spaces, an art café, an art store, and an
auditorium are all found inside. What else? Since the MOG creator, Mr. Subodh Kerkar, does not
believe in permanent installations, the installations change periodically.
2) Houses of Goa Museum
A beautiful collection of houses from Goa's Colonial era may be found in the Houses of Goa
Museum. The museum itself is a magnificent work of architecture with a ship-like appearance. The
museum, which Gerard de Cunha designed and constructed, contains furnishings, ornaments for the
home, window and door frames, railings, ceramic tiles, and other artefacts from the period when
Goan culture incorporated Portuguese architecture.
The Salvador do Mundo (Savior of the World) town near Porvorim, which is away from the Mapusa
highway, is where you can find the Houses of Goa museum.
It is a triangular, multi-story structure that resembles a ship marooned on an island very much.
For those who are interested in art and architecture, Houses of Goa is a must-visit.
People who visit this museum should proceed to the nearby Mario Gallery as their next destination.
3) Goa Science centre
The 5-acre Goa Science Centre & Planetarium in Miramar is a science museum including a
planetarium, a theatre for 3D performances, and a number of scientific exhibits. Numerous
programmes are being run to show the general people how science works. It was started as a
collaborative project between the National Council of Science Museums and the state Department
of Science, Technology & Environment with the aim of inspiring young people to be interested in
science.
The Goa Science Centre is a fascinating educational facility that offers interactive science displays for
children to explore and learn about. It is situated across the coastline, close to Miramar Circle.
You can allow your children to use, handle, or manipulate scientific tools and displays here so they
can see the results for themselves. It resembles participating in a live science experiment! A four-
acre outdoor science park with prehistoric animal exhibits and games featuring science is another
feature of the Science Centre. Additionally, the planetarium and the mirror room could be a lot of
fun for you and your children.
4) Wax Museum
When you walk into the Wax Museum, be prepared to be amazed. There are wax sculptures of
famous figures from various religious, historical, and cultural backgrounds—all reaching out to you in
silent invitation to explore their mysteries.
You won't want to miss the Last Supper. Measuring 22 feet long and weighing 500 kg, it will give you
an accurate picture of what the food looked like, what people were wearing at that time, and even
how they felt about being there together on that historic day in Christian history.
5 big foot cross museum
Imagine a museum that looks back at the rural life from a century ago. Imagine a museum that was
developed to preserve local culture and customs for future generations.
Loutolim is home to the Big Foot Cross Museum, and it's an outdoor attraction that shows snippets
of rural Goan life at the time, 100 years ago.
Maendra Jocelino Araujo Alvares, a local artist, is the creator of the Ancestral Goa Center. It
accurately depicts Goan village life a century ago. Due to its huge dance floor in the shape of a foot,
it is also known as the "Big Foot" Cross Museum. It was developed in order to preserve local culture
and customs for upcoming generations.
The museum's proprietor, Maendra Jocelino Araujo Alvares, created a sculpture of Saint Mirabai
that stands 14 metres tall out of laterite. As the largest laterite sculpture in the nation, this sculpture
is listed in the Limca Book of Records. On your way out, be sure to pick up a memento or two from
the handicraft centre as a remember of your time-traveling experience!
5) Indian Naval Aviation Museum
A military museum called the Naval Aviation Museum is situated at Bogmalo, India, 6 kilometres
from Vasco da Gama. Exhibits in this museum depict how the Indian Naval Air Arm has changed over
the years. A two-story interior gallery and an outdoor exhibit make up the museum's two main
sections. One of India's two military aviation museums, the other being the Indian Air Force
Museum, Palam in Delhi, the museum was opened to the public in October 1998. There is no other
institution like the Naval Aviation Museum in Asia.
6) Goa Chitra Museum
In Benaulim, South Goa, there is a historical museum called Goa Chitra. In the year 2010, Victor Huge
Gomez founded the museum. With a focus on Goa's traditional agrarian technology and lifestyle, it
contains a remarkable and sizable private collection of over 4000 objects.
If a museum is listed as "India's Top Contemporary Museum" by the Archaeological Survey of India,
it should unquestionably be on your list of "must-visit places" in Goa.
